Adult Costumes in Halloween Stores

Parents beware! Halloween costume shops may have more than Spiderman, ghoul and witch costumes. At the end of last years Halloween season the Pittsburgh Coalition Against Pornography was notified, by an offended parent, of adult costumes intermingled with children’s costumes at a local Halloween Superstore.Costumes with oversized nude breasts and bottoms were openly displayed alongside children’s costumes. There were also adult costumes of Playboy bunnies and “screws and nuts” for couples to wear. It is not illegal to sell these costumes per se, but displaying them alongside of children’s costumes is grossly insensitive and may violate the state public display law of indecent material. They need to be displayed in a sectioned off area of the store. We need your help to be our eyes and ears! Please look around you while you shop for costumes this year and let us know if a store is displaying these kind of items in an insensitive, and possibly illegal, manner. It would be most helpful if you complained right away to the store manager and then called us. Many managers and owners don’t take us seriously when we make a complaint in isolation. They expect PCAP to be against everything adult! But when we follow-up the complaint of a patron or two there is greater respect for our position and advice.
